I have always struggled with my weight from a young age slowly putting it on in my early and late teens. I tried so many diets that I became an expert in most of them but even though I managed to lose weight sometimes I could never keep it off. It had a massive impact on my confidence and self esteem and I tried to hide under loose fitting and dark clothes. I finally had enough and went to see my GP and discussed the option of having gastric surgery as I never managed to control my weight. I was referred to the bariatric team at UHCW and over a time period was given counselling and group sessions and advice on what the best route was. I then had several meetings with my dietician and other members of the team and we discussed everything relating to how I got to where I was and how we were going to move forward. I found these sessions extremely helpful as I was able to discuss everything without being judged. My Dietician saw me through the whole process and I still have appointments now to discuss my progress....
Mr T is a retired Maths teacher, he is 69 and had 5 major co-morbidities. Mt T lost 6 stone and still losing weight. He has stopped 80% of his medications, changed his wardrobe!
Subsequent to appointments with various members of the Bariatric Team I embarked on the most life-changing, exciting adventure in my adult years.
Throughout my journey I experienced encouragement, motivation, patience, compassion, a wealth of information in the most re-assuring environment not to mention the high level of professionalism and expertise in this field.
I have battled with Obesity and immensely negative impact for so long there was no holding back when I received that call to see the Surgeon who in his wisdom recommended the procedure for best results.
The day arrived when my new life began at 66. Surgeon's final chat, Anaesthetist, Surgical team. Of course a little trepidation and much to take in (not foodwise!) post op according to a structured easy program together with ongoing monitoring and support.
Every new day was better than the previous one. The physical, emotional and mental changes have been like layers of huge bandages unfurling and dropping in revealing the real me and giving me my life back!
Well it's someone I haven't known or seen in a long, long time. Is it really me? Are these really my bones?
Wow. My miracle. The scales reflect unimaginable, remarkable results. I'm flying high.
I feel stronger, feel great, happier and fitter than I have done in 40 years. No holding back.
Living every minute to the fullest.
Thank you NHS and the whole wonderful team for your amazing, life-changing gift. I feel so passionate about what this surgery has done for me.
From the bottom of my heart - endless gratitude.
I had my surgery in October 2015 and I was well looked after and was well informed about what was going to happen to me. When I needed any answers the Dietitian was always available to assist me. She has been a support to me all the way through my journey. Though I still have a way to go I know I can email her and she will give me an answer. Since my operation I have lost five stone in weight. I have a lot of other major health issues which made it difficult for me to move about. I am able to move better, though still not far. I am able to get a better choice of clothes and a better fit. Everyone tells me how well I look and my face has changed so much over the past 18 months. I have no regrets about having my operation despite my other health issues are not letting me be more mobile. Had I not had this operation I dread to think how much I would have weighed, being 20 stone when I had the operation and am now 15st with another 4st to go which I know with time will go.
Mr F (then 32 years old) collapsed at the wheel while on the motorway from major gastrointestinal bleeding. The patient was rushed via ambulance to hospital, underwent emergency lifesaving surgery of the stomach and pancreas. Mr F remains alive and well 9 years later and remains grateful for the amazing intervention he had under the care of Mr Menon and his team.
Testimonial from Mr F:
“I hope you and the family are all well, I look at my previous texts and can't believe how quickly time goes, it is 9 years today since your amazing intervention, it has been a strange time as some former football team mates have died this year, it makes me realise how lucky I am, I will hopefully be qualified at the end of this year which will be great, it is hard work travelling to London every week but I work at an excellent firm, it would be great to see you at some point, please pass my best on to everybody and let them know that I always think of them”
I have been over weight all of my life, from as far back as I can remember. Always the biggest of my siblings, the biggest in my friendship groups and the biggest in my family. I was in a cycle lots of obese people find themselves in, I would comfort eat to feel better then pile the pounds on making me unhappy. I dieted over the years, trying everything from Weight Watchers to Cambridge diet. I must have spent thousands on diet products, gym membership, exercise equipment and quick fix pills and potions. In 2008 I got married and the wedding motivated me to lose 5 stone. Within 18 months I had put almost all of it back on again. It was then I realised I had a serious issue with food. I was an addict and needed to change my mindset so I started therapy. It helped me to resolve some issues but I convinced myself I would be fine if I could just get rid of my huge boobs!
In December 2012 I paid privately for a breast reduction and mini tummy tuck. I felt great! Six months later I realised I had put on more weight and was feeling really poorly. Aching joints, lethargy, high blood pressure, sleep apnoea and tiredness. I also felt very low and knew I needed to address my weight once and for all...
My ever increasing weight was never mentioned growing up, however at the age of 16 I joined the first of many slimming groups. The desire to lose the weight was so strong that I could lose huge amounts of weight (6-7 stones) at a given time however I lacked the ability to keep going and not put any weight back on. The psychological comfort I sought from food and in particular binge eating was too great and therefore when life started to through further challenges at me I managed them the same way I had always done. In putting everyone and everything before myself I subsequently got heavier and heavier.
I turned to my GP to request a referral to the weight management team at UHCW. Little did I know at the time that this would be the start of a journey that would give me life. For 2 years the majority of my appointments were with the Doctors and the dietician. I remember my first appointment vividly. I viewed coming to this clinic as my last chance and remember feeling optimistic that this team would have the answers to help me but also apprehensive since nothing had worked for me previously so why should this? As with my weight loss journey prior to attending this clinic I faced lots of successes and setbacks, again largely owing to the underlying psychological impact on my eating habits. With a lifetime of being advised to follow particular diets/plans, it felt surreal to not leave my first appointment with the Dietitian with such a plan. The focus was on making small achievable goals based on eating healthy meals and healthy portions...
