GASTRIC BANDING

Laparoscopic Gastric Banding

To aid some patients get rid of excess weight, when other options have not been successful, the insertion of a gastric band into the stomach may be helpful.

Under general anaesthetic a surgeon will place a silicone band around the stomach using laparoscopic – or keyhole – surgery making a number of small incisions to the abdomen. This type of surgery is far less invasive and has a faster recovery time than the older method of performing one large incision. The band divides the stomach in two leaving a smaller area at the top that reduces the amount of food patients can eat before feeling full.

A healthier lifestyle, diet and exercise are recommended after the procedure to help with the long term goals of continuing weight loss. Full recovery after surgery is expected within two weeks alongside ongoing regular check-ups.
