Professor Vinod Menon and the bariatric endoscopy team at Coventry Hospital have reached an important milestone, completing 20 Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty procedures.
Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty, often referred to as ESG, is a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure used in the treatment of obesity. Unlike traditional bariatric surgery, ESG is performed through the mouth using an endoscope, meaning there are no external incisions. The procedure reduces the size of the stomach to help patients feel fuller sooner and support long-term weight management.
This milestone reflects the development of a growing bariatric endoscopy programme at Coventry Hospital, led by a specialist team with support from experienced proctors and industry partners.
The achievement was recognised by Dr Devinder Bansi, Consultant Gastroenterologist, who congratulated Professor Menon, Dr John Wong and the wider Coventry team for their progress. He also highlighted the potential for the programme to become one of the higher volume bariatric endoscopy centres in the UK.
As obesity treatment continues to evolve, procedures such as ESG may offer an important option for carefully selected patients who are looking for a less invasive approach than traditional bariatric surgery.
For patients considering treatment, specialist assessment remains essential. The most appropriate option depends on each person’s medical history, weight journey, health goals and long-term support needs.
This latest milestone marks another positive step forward for bariatric endoscopy services in Coventry and reflects the continued progress being made in modern obesity care.
