Independent medico-legal expertise in upper GI, bariatric and general surgery

Prof. Vinod Menon offers clear, balanced and evidence-based medico-legal reports for solicitors, trusts and other professional bodies. His clinical background includes more than two decades as a consultant surgeon, with extensive experience in upper gastrointestinal surgery, bariatric and metabolic surgery, cancer surgery, laparoscopic procedures and wider general surgical practice.

He was appointed as Consultant Upper Gastro-intestinal and Laparoscopic Surgeon at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust in January 2003. He has also served as Clinical Director for 11 years across a major surgical division and continues to hold senior academic and training roles, including Honorary Clinical Professor at the University of Warwick and Director of the West Midlands Surgical Training Centre.

Clinical background

Prof. Menon is an experienced laparoscopic upper gastrointestinal and obesity surgeon, with a substantial operative background that includes over 1,350 bariatric and metabolic procedures, more than 900 laparoscopic hiatus hernia repairs and anti-reflux procedures, over 1,000 laparoscopic gall bladder removals, and more than 400 oesophageal and gastric cancer resections.

His professional leadership includes serving as Past President of the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society (BOMSS), having previously held the roles of Treasurer and Honorary Secretary, as well as serving on the council of the Association of Upper GI Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (AUGIS).

Medico-legal experience

Prof. Menon commenced medico-legal work in 2020 and currently completes approximately 10 to 12 reports each year, with a claimant/defendant ratio of 1:1. He has completed the Bond Solon course in Excellence in Report Writing – Written Evidence, and has produced expert reports following instructions from solicitors, ombudsman services and trusts.

His extensive experience in clinical practice, service leadership, governance, education and research supports the preparation of well-reasoned medico-legal opinion that is practical, objective and informed by current surgical standards. This is a fair inference from his published consultant, leadership, examiner and academic roles.
