Patient Feedback

Mrs K, 40 years old, lap sleeve gastrectomy

“I have been over weight all of my life, from as far back as I can remember. Always the biggest of my siblings, the biggest in my friendship groups and the biggest in my family. I was in a cycle lots of obese people find themselves in, I would comfort eat to feel better then pile the pounds on making me unhappy. I dieted over the years, trying everything from Weight Watchers to Cambridge diet. I must have spent thousands on diet products, gym membership, exercise equipment and quick fix pills and potions. In 2008 I got married and the wedding motivated me to lose 5 stone. Within 18 months I had put almost all of it back on again. It was then I realised I had a serious issue with food. I was an addict and needed to change my mindset so I started therapy. It helped me to resolve some issues but I convinced myself I would be fine if I could just get rid of my huge boobs!

In December 2012 I paid privately for a breast reduction and mini tummy tuck. I felt great! Six months later I realised I had put on more weight and was feeling really poorly. Aching joints, lethargy, high blood pressure, sleep apnoea and tiredness. I also felt very low and knew I needed to address my weight once and for all.

I went to see my GP who was so kind and understanding and referred me to UHCW for an initial appointment. Little did I know what was to lie ahead!

Over the next Two years I had several appointments with the psychologist. She has been very supportive in offering help to deal with the mental health consequences of obesity and the impact post op. I cannot praise the dieticians enough. The Dietitian has been an absolute diamond. No question has ever been a ‘silly’ question and I have never once felt judged or a nuisance. I have encountered judgements from other healthcare professionals and it is refreshing to be around a team that is so supportive and helpful. The Dietitian was also very supportive post op in helping me find the right balance of foods to eat.

March 17th 2016 is the day my life changed. I cannot tell you how much gratitude I have to Mr Menon the surgeon who magically transformed my life. His skill and dedication to his work ensured my op went smoothly and he was so kind and caring on the day I had surgery and after for follow up appointments. There’s no doubt about it I couldn’t ever thank him enough for all he has done. !

All of the Bariatric Team at UHCW have been fantastic. I would highly recommend this hospital to any patient considering surgery. Everyone from the nurses, dieticians, admin, consultants and even the reception at WISDEM have been great. It is a team effort and lovely to feel part of that team.

So 12 months post op and just over 9 stone lighter my life is very different from 12 months ago. I feel happier, confident and healthier. I no longer suffer from all the aches and pains I had pre surgery and I have a new lease of life. I have taken up exercise and love walking now as well as buying clothes! Although it’s been a difficult journey and not an easy option, I wouldn’t change it for the world. I am determined to make the most of this second chance at a healthy life and will never go back to how I used to be.”
